Conference
The Ninth Conference: Seattle, Washington
Sunday, July 20 - Sunday, July 27, 2008
The Eighth Conference in Kyoto and Tokyo, Summer 2007
The Program's eighth annual conference was held in Kyoto and Tokyo from July 22-29, 2007. All conferences allow the group of young leaders to engage in daily plenary sessions on past, current and future issues of mutual interest. Experts from each nation are often invited to present remarks at the daily plenary sessions and delegates give presentations on topics of their expertise. Plenary sessions are followed by intensive small-group discussions.
During their stay in Japan, the group enjoyed a traditional Japanese dance performance, visited many temples in Kyoto, and spent a day in Hiroshima. Fellows joined the current delegates in Tokyo for the final two days of the conference.
Delegates for the Seattle 2008 Conference
The newly selected American and Japanese delegates who will attend the Seattle 2008 conference must be between the ages of 28 and 42 on July 22, 2008, and must have demonstrated leadership, achievement, or the potential for leadership in their respective fields. Consideration will be given to men and women from a broad spectrum of careers including, but certainly not limited to, national and local government, business, academia, finance, media (TV, print, and Internet), labor, law, law enforcement, NGO's, non-profit organizations, science and technology, engineering, medicine, military, religion, the arts (theatre, film, music, graphic), entertainment, and sports.
The newly selected delegates to the 2008 conference will be joined by some second year delegates, as Japanese and American delegates who have successfully participated in a Japan Conference will be invited to attend their second conference in Seattle. Activities including a Seattle Mariners baseball game will be occuring throughout the week, culminating in a reunion with Japanese and American fellows.
Guidelines for the Seattle 2008 Conference
The Foundation will cover all travel expenses (business class for international flights and economy class for domestic travel) and lodging expenses for the delegates. Incidental and/or personal charges (e.g., telephone calls, laundry, parking) during the Program are to be paid by the delegates.
Delegates will be expected to attend all events from Sunday, July 20 through activities on Saturday evening, July 26. Unexplained absences from any activities could result in the loss of membership in the USJLP.
As the purpose of the conference is to have the delegates spend as much time getting to know one another as possible, delegates are asked to come unaccompanied by their spouse, partner, and/or children. Family members are encouraged to join the group during the last two days of the conference when fellows will also be invited to join the group.
All meetings will be conducted in English. Delegates may be asked to make one presentation and/or moderate a plenary session during the week.
Membership in the USJLP is a lifetime commitment. Delegates and fellows are encouraged to stay connected via the mailing list, and fellows are encouraged to help in discovering new young leaders as well as give an annual contribution ($100.00 or 10,000 Yen).
